Pesce Azzurro

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on November 22, 2015 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Previously a fishing hamlet, Woodstock has always been an area with a mixed community. It was a grey area which fell outside the implementation of the Group Areas Act, according to Andrew Fleming in Making a Place for the Rich? Urban Poor Evictions and Gentrification in Woodstock, 2011. Woodstock was not part of the racially-motivated removals that took place during the apartheid era. In 1986 when there was a call … Continue reading →

Woodstock, Cape Town

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on July 11, 2015 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Deon and I took a short break during the June holidays and decided to explore Cape Town as much as possible during the few days. First of all we decided to visit Woodstock which is one of Cape Town’s oldest suburbs. Woodstock is within reach of Table Mountain (a beautiful backdrop to Woodstock); the CBD and the V&A Waterfront. We had been to the Old Biscuit Mill on a previous … Continue reading →

Paula’s Birthday

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on June 12, 2015 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Last week, on 5 June 2015, we celebrated Paula, my sister-in-law’s birthday. They arrived on Friday afternoon. For the birthday feast, we booked dinner at a restaurant in Bloubergstrand, called Ons Huisie, a heritage site. Before we left for dinner, we toasted Paula with a glass of bubbly. Ons Huisie (or Our Little House) was formally a fisherman’s home. We were impressed with the warm atmosphere which met us inside, … Continue reading →

Sesame-Yogurt-Cardamom Cake

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on February 22, 2015 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

I found the recipe for this interesting cake in the February 2015 edition of the Tuis/Home Magazine. It was created for the magazine by Karen Dudley from The Kitchen in Woodstock. I served it instead of dessert on Sunday and it immediately became a new favourite in our home. The cake is not at all too sweet, as cakes usually tend to be. I served it with vanilla ice-cream and … Continue reading →

The Old Biscuit Mill

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on January 3, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Long ago it was a biscuit factory, but today The Old Biscuit Mill in the industrial area of Woodstock is a vibrant hub, with the highlight on Saturday mornings at the Neighbourgoods Market with its gourmet food, organic produce, fresh flowers, clothing and much more. We visited the market one Saturday morning and were stunned by the collection of arts and crafts; the designer cakes and artisan breads.  I saw … Continue reading →

Off to cooking class

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on July 27, 2013 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

We read about Perfect Paella, owned by José and Lisa Gómez, in Cape Town.  It seemed like a good idea to attend and to learn more about Spanish cooking and paella in particular.  When we mentioned it to Deborah, she was enthusiastic as well.  She and her son, Krige, have just completed a Spanish language course and she thought this could be a good thing for her and Krige to … Continue reading →
