IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on December 7, 2021 by adminDecember 7, 2021

We had to visit Hermanus in connection with the renovation of our new home in Greyton.  On route back to Greyton, we stopped at Die Plaaskombuis for lunch. The entrance to the restaurant is via the Farm Stall, where you could easily spend a couple of hours.  There are fresh vegetables and eggs, frozen home cooked food, preserves, cups and saucers, plates, sweet treats and much more – even an … Continue reading →

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on February 26, 2017 by adminFebruary 26, 2017

Today bobotie – spicy mince with a custard topping – is a typical South African dish.  According to Wikipedia, the first bobotie was prepared by Apicius, a Roman, some 2 000 years ago.  South African writer, C. Louis Leipoldt, wrote that bobotie was known in Europe in the 17th century.  Some people think that it originated from an Indonesian dish called bobotok   Whatever the origin, we know it as a Cape … Continue reading →

The Local Grill, Val du Charron

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on October 30, 2016 by adminNovember 21, 2016

Described on their website as simply nirvana for carnivores, is not really what I have in mind when I visit a restaurant for lunch, but the beautiful setting of the restaurant, situated 7 km from Wellington, makes up for the statement on their menu. The Local Grill is the restaurant at the Val du Charron Wine and Olive Estate.  The estate was established in 1699.  The farm was named Val … Continue reading →

Oh my Darling!

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on July 18, 2015 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

As a reward to ourselves for working hard during the first six months of the year, we decided to spend a couple of days in the small village of Darling, 75 km from Cape Town and 25 km from Yzerfontein along the West Coast. On our way, we noticed the dull and grey shrubs that is called Renosterveld, often dominated by Renosterbos. It is found only in the South, South … Continue reading →

Alberto’s Restaurant and Pub Durbanville

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on July 5, 2015 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Wow, after being hugely disappointed with the closing of our favourite pub in Oxford Street, we discovered a new pub in Durbanville – Alberto’s Restaurant and Pub in King Street. What a surprise to find this excellent pub/restaurant so close to us. It has been in Durbanville for 15 years (how did we not see it in the almost five years of living in Durbanville?). The food is excellent – … Continue reading →

Bobotie for Banters

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on May 16, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

I bought a packet of psyllium husks recently and it was just sitting there on the shelf for about a month, before I decided to tackle the strange ingredient and to see what it is like. Because I like to know what I am eating, I first of all googled Wikipedia to read more about it.  According to Wikipedia, psyllium seed husks are portions of the plant Planago ovate, a … Continue reading →
