Phizante Kraal Restaurant
It was my birthday on 18 March and Deon and I went for lunch at Phizante Kraal Restaurant in the Durbanville Wine Valley. The farm is situated not more than 1 km from Durbanville. The first owner of the farm Groot Phesantekraal was Captain Oloff Berg. The farm was granted to him in 1698 by Governor Simon van der Stel. In 1897 the Brink family became the new owners of the farm.
What a wonderful surprise awaited us when we arrived at the restaurant. First of all a beautiful garden and white washed buildings welcome the guests. The restaurant is a converted barn, beautifully decorated with modern touches. Deon and I agreed that this type of building would be the perfect home for us to live in one day. This is a family run business – restaurant and winery – and the Brinks have certainly made a huge success of it. Friendly staff and excellent food tops it all.
For lunch we had a choice between braised pork belly and line fish. Obviously, Deon’s choice was once again the pork belly. My line fish was served on a bed of quinoa; long grain rice, summer veggies, fresh mango and a house dressing. Both dishes were perfect. For dessert (only because it was my birthday) we shared a blue berry tart and a chocolate ring with meringue. It was to die for – but not good for you if you are watching your weight!
It was a lovely afternoon in a beautiful, historical setting. We would certainly visit this restaurant again.
