This Friday we were both too busy at work to explore Cape Town’s restaurants. But we will have our outing if there is time next week, maybe to our local pub.
When on holiday in London and Amsterdam in December 2006, we explored some pubs. On one of our days in London we left the hotel at 11:00 and returned the next morning at 3:00. We were enjoying our holiday thoroughly! Because of the cold weather, the fires burning in the fireplaces in all the pubs were certainly part of the pub attraction. We were surprised to learn that the British families and friends regularly visit the pubs for a good meal and a beer or glass of wine after work. Back in Port Elizabeth, we wished that we could find a local English style pub.
In December 2010, we relocated to Cape Town. We often passed the Oxford Arms pub in Oxford Street, Durbanville. One day on a cold winter’s day we decided to have lunch at the pub. To our surprise, we found a cosy dining area inside with a welcoming fire burning in the fireplace. The walls are painted in a deep plum colour and the room is always dimly lit, which enhances the atmosphere. There are even some paintings on the walls from local painters. The pub is popular with the locals and is usually buzzing with families enjoying supper and something to drink. I heard that this is the best place in Cape Town for a Guinness beer.
The food is not nouvelle cuisine; it could rather be called hearty (and plenty). On the menu are Springbok Guinness Pie, steak, curry; fish and chips, bangers and mash with gravy, calamari, baskets with chicken strips, etc. Deon’s favourite is the lamb shank. I usually prefer the chicken pie which is served with a square of puff pastry – very creatively done. Do not expect veggies other than pumpkin (not too sweet) and creamed spinach. I always secretly wonder if there is a huge pumpkin and spinach garden outside.
We are now regular visitors to the pub. We usually go there after a long work day and best of all is that you do not need to book a table. The atmosphere is rustic; it is the perfect place to relax and you get good food at good prices. We love to take friends and visitors to our local English style waterhole. So watch out friends and family, when you come to visit, you now know for sure that you will do some pub crawling with us.
