For Christmas Day 2014 we had meze and everybody had to help to prepare the different dishes. I asked my brother Johan and sister-in-law Paula to prepare the mussels and chorizo in spicy tomato sauce. It was served with crusty bread and it was a very popular dish with the guests.
Ingredients (serves 2)
600 g cleaned mussels in the shell (or without the shell if it is your choice)
About 70 g sliced chorizo
2 T Olive oil
5 ml fresh chilli, finely chopped
5 ml chopped garlic
1 x 400 g can Italian whole cherry tomatoes in juice
5 ml Italian parsley
5 ml curry powder
5 ml cumin powder
5 ml sugar
Zest of a small lemon
A pinch of salt
Fry the chorizo and onion in the heated oil. Stir in the garlic and chilli. Add the tomatoes and break it up slightly. Simmer briskly for 10 minutes. Add the mussels, parsley, curry and cumin powder, as well as the salt and sugar. Cover tightly, increase the heat and cook for a few minutes. Discard mussels that do not open. Season to taste and add the lemon zest. Enjoy with crusty bread and a good Chenin Blanc.
