IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT BURGER: The Eatery at the Durbanville Hills Wine Estate & the Red Leaf Restaurant at Beyerskloof
During the school holidays we decided to venture out in search of the perfect (or at least a very good) hamburger in and around Cape Town. The first one Deon tried, was at The Eatery at the Durbanville Hills Wine Estate just outside Durbanville. It is called the Gourmet Venison Burger and Chips and was made with ostrich meat. It was served on a wooden platter with potato wedges. It was really delicious and beautifully presented. The potato wedges were very good, and the burger just perfect, done on the outside and just pink inside. The patty was of a really high quality.
Our meal was accompanied by die Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc, one of our favourite wines. It is a fruity wine with a crisp acidity.
The restaurant at Durbanville Hills is in a beautiful, modern building with views toward the sea at Blouberg and Melkbos. We would definitely return on a sunny day, as we visited when it was overcast and raining.
We next tried out the Red Leaf Restaurant pinotage burger at Beyerskloof outside Stellenbosch. They are famous for their pinotage burger with onion marmalade and chips. We sat outside on the deck with beautiful views of the vineyards and the mountains. We both ordered pinotage burgers. It was again beautifully presented. But we were both a little disappointed with our burgers. The pinotage sauce on the burger made the bun soggy and unappetising.
We had the Chenin Blanc / Pinotage with our meal. Next time when we visit we would try something else on the menu as well as their red wine.
Sandra loved the company of the resident dog, Chester!
I think Sandra should try to cook the perfect hamburger! What about one in filo?!
