At last it was Friday again, that means, to us, having lunch at an unknown venue. It was not difficult to choose a restaurant this week, as we followed our own “Kuberkok”, Nina Timm’s advice. So off we went to Hemelhuijs at Waterkant Street, next to the popular Fan Walk.
Hemelhuijs is a little gem with an excellent chef hiding in the kitchen, Jacques Erasmus, who is indeed talented. The beautiful crockery on display is something I would love to own. The menu is an artwork itself, with beautiful photographs and quotes about life. We also loved the black salt on the tables.
The main event, the food, is extraordinary. It is beautifully presented on magnificent plates and the food is more than excellent. The service was also perfect. As a bonus, Deon and I had a huge surprise when the door opened and a dear friend, Mariette Rossouw from Port Elizabeth, entered the restaurant.
Deon’s lunch was “Frikkadelle” with mashed Sandveld potatoes and tomato relish. I ordered Gnocci with aubergine puree. For dessert, we shared a light meringue cake with butter cream. Perfect, or as the name of the restaurant suggests – heavenly!
