Greek Style on a Friday
We love Greek food and the ambience of a Greek restaurant. And yes, we love Greece with its relaxed atmosphere, the magnificent islands and blue water and last, but not least, its moussaka and meze!
During Johan and Paula’s visit last year in October, we attempted having lunch at Spiro’s, a Greek restaurant in Hout Bay, but on our way we spotted another interesting looking restaurant in Kloof Street and did not reach our original destination because of this detour. When they visited us again in January this year, I immediately decided to reserve a table at Spiro’s and made sure that we did not get distracted again.

The Patio
Why Spiro’s? Two years ago we went to Hout Bay to buy my church organ and after the purchase we sat on the patio at Spiro’s and had a light meal. Part of the complex in which it is situated, is an art gallery with some interesting paintings. I loved the atmosphere at Spiro’s and decided that we would soon return for a proper lunch.
Spiro’s is a family owned restaurant, situated on the Main Road on the way to Chapman’s Peak. We were greeted warmly as we entered the restaurant by Spiro, the owner. The menu looked inviting with traditional and authentic Greek food on offer.

Something Blue
I must say, it was a difficult choice, as I always tend to order Moussaka at a Greek restaurant. But the meze usually wins and we all decided to order meze. We had to combine a few mezes to make up our main course. Deon and I chose kolokithakia or courgette ribbons which were grilled and served with a garlic dip; keftedes or beef meatballs with a tzatziki dip; crispy squid with heads and tentacles, lightly floured and fried; as well as naxos or fried chips with caramelised onion and olives, sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Instead of keftedes, Johan and Paula ordered soutzoukakia or beef meatballs in a spicy cumin and tomato sauce. Served with hummus and melitzanosalata, a grilled aubergine, garlic, lemon and olive oil dip, as well as a glass of white wine each, it was a real feast.

Greek Meze
Spiro’s is an unpretentious, traditional Greek restaurant with excellent food. Situated in beautiful Hout Bay, it is a perfect spot for having lunch and to dream about Greece.
