George’s Greek Restaurant

George’s Taverna
Going Greek again, after the previous Friday lunch at a Greek restaurant, we were in the mood for everything Greek. We even watched our favourite film, Shirley Valentine, again!
Situated between Somerset West and Stellenbosch on Helderberg Road, we found the unpretentious white building George’s Greek Restaurant is situated in. A donkey with a wide grin welcomed us on the patio.

Welcome!
On the inside the family owned restaurant is decorated in typical Greek fashion. We loved the hand painted walls and the different shades of blue and turquoise used throughout the décor. It was like sitting in a Greek taverna in Mykonos or Santorini again. On a summer’s night guests could dine on the patio, al fresco style. On a cold wintery evening you could sit close to the fire if the underfloor heating is not warm enough for you. Today we were all alone in the restaurant, except for the staff. The waitron assured us that they were extremely busy at night, especially over weekends. According to many reviews, it is a very popular venue.

Interior In Shades Of Blue
For starters we ordered a dip platter and pita bread. The dips were Hummus, Skordalia and Kipiti. Skordalia is potatoes blended with extra virgin olive oil, garlic and lemon juice and Kipiti is Feta Cheese blended with peppers and fresh chilli.

For mains I had my favourite – Moussaka and a Greek Salad. Deon had Greek Style Lamb on the spit with Mediterranean Vegetables and Roasted Potatoes. It was a Greek feast. Other specialities on the menu are Grilled Calamari; Souvla Braai; Kleftico or Meze style platters.

Dessert was Loukoumades which are Greek doughnuts sprinkled with honey and cinamon.

Loukoumades
This is a restaurant with a typical Greek ambience and great food – not to be missed. I can imagine a great atmosphere when filled with guests. We’ll be back soon!
