Lola’s on Long Street

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on March 16, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

We discovered a gem in Long Street, Cape Town’s city centre on Saturday.  And what a delight little Lola is.  We came across this restaurant on the corner of Long Street and Buiten Street by accident.  We were on our way to our hair salon, Swordfern, in Harrington Road, when we decided to have a quick breakfast somewhere in Long Street.  But, as it was quite early, most of the … Continue reading →

Tomato Meatballs

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on March 9, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

In 2010 we visited the little town Garies in the Northern Cape briefly.  We spent some time with one of the families and had tomato meatballs for dinner.  It was the most perfect round meatballs I have ever seen.  Luckily the host gave me the recipe, but unfortunately I misplaced it.  To my astonishment I opened one of my recipe books a month ago and there it was – stuck … Continue reading →

Music from heaven at Oude Libertas

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on March 8, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Last night, on Friday 7 March 2014, we again visited the Oude Libertas Amphitheater in Stellenbosch. The event was Stabat Mater, composed in 2008 by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. Stabat Mater is a 13th–century Roman Catholic poem, meditating on the suffering of Jesus Christ’s mother, Mary, during his crucifixion. The title is an abbreviation of the first line, Stabat Mater dolorosa, meaning the sorrowful mother was standing. The composer incorporated … Continue reading →

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on March 3, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

I love easy, but glamorous desserts.  I made this dessert within 10 minutes on a Sunday evening.  A friend gave us wonderful fresh figs and I decided to combine them with Phyllo pastry and Mascarpone cheese. It turned out to be a quick and delicious dessert. Ingredients (enough to make 4 tarts) Two sheets of Phyllo pastry, lightly buttered, layered and cut into 4 pieces Fresh figs Mascarpone cheese Honey … Continue reading →

A visit to Oude Libertas Amphitheatre

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on March 2, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Last night, on 1 March 2014,  we went to the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, situated on the slopes of the Papegaaiberg in Stellenbosch.  We visited the open-air theatre with friends for the ATKV Proudly South African Muziqanto show.  The recent winners of some of S.A.’s most important classical music competitions, ATKV-Muziq (instrumentalists) and ATKV-Muziqanto (vocalists) combined specially for this concert.  The artists were the mezzo soprano Minette du Toit-Pearce; Abraham Mennen  … Continue reading →

Meteora – suspended in the air

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on February 23, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

In June 2010 we were off to Europe and we included Meteora, meaning suspended in the air,  in Central Greece as part of our itinerary.  We booked into Plakias guesthouse in Kalampaka, the city under the towering rocks of Meteora. What makes Meteora worth the visit is the monasteries built on huge rocks. Many tourists gather in Kalampaka every year to torture themselves climbing the many steps to the monasteries.  … Continue reading →

Valentine’s day 2014

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on February 20, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Time flies.  This was our fourth Valentine’s Day since we have been living in Cape Town.  We do not like crowds during festivities like this, so we decided to spoil ourselves at home.  Deon was responsible for dessert.  The starter was my favourite watermelon, feta and basil salad.  As a main course we had salmon in filo parcels with veggies and the dessert was baked Camembert with figs, berry coulis … Continue reading →

Moussaka

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on January 28, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Moussaka It is so strange that many people shrug when they hear the word eggplant, so the following recipe is for those who love eggplant.  I suggest, however, that those who do not like eggplant also try this, especially as the eggplant is hardly noticeable in the dish.  Jeffrey Steingarten wrote a book with the title “The Man Who Ate Everything”.  When he had to answer the question “Do you … Continue reading →

Bo-Kaap

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on January 18, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

There is but one Bo-Kaap in the world.  What a privilege to live in Cape Town and to visit this area.  We love the buzz, the vibrance, the beautiful buildings, the shops, the artists and above all, the mountain.  The name of our favourite Italian restaurant in the Cape Quarter, Andiamo, means:  Let’s go!  The meaning of Bo-Kaap is Upper Cape Town.

Coq au Vin

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on January 12, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

Pickled Fish

HDR pictures

IN SEARCH OF A GOOD LIFE Posted on January 3, 2014 by adminFebruary 10, 2016

I tried my hand at HDR photography when visiting Europe in 2010.  HDR stands for High-dynamic-range imaging.  It is a technique to reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity than possible using standard digital imaging or photographic techniques. HDR images can represent more accurately the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, from direct sunlight to deep shadows, for example.  HDR compensates for this by capturing multiple photographs at … Continue reading →
