A visit to Oude Libertas Amphitheatre
Last night, on 1 March 2014, we went to the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre, situated on the slopes of the Papegaaiberg in Stellenbosch. We visited the open-air theatre with friends for the ATKV Proudly South African Muziqanto show. The recent winners of some of S.A.’s most important classical music competitions, ATKV-Muziq (instrumentalists) and ATKV-Muziqanto (vocalists) combined specially for this concert. The artists were the mezzo soprano Minette du Toit-Pearce; Abraham Mennen on the saxophone; soprano Caroline Modiba; the US Percussion Duo; soprano Vanessa Tait-Jones and violinist, Jacqueline Wedderburn-Maxwell. The very talented Phillippus Hugo was the pianist and convenor of the programme.
We arrived early at the theatre to enjoy a picnic on the green lawn, surrounded by oak trees. My good friend Woollies helped to prepare the picnic; the weather was fine and we had a wonderful evening under the stars, listening to the beautiful music of the extremely talented musicians. The architecture of the theatre is Spanish and adds to the beautiful, intimate setting under the stars. We sure had an enjoyable evening in beautiful Stellenbosch.
