Looking for a great Mediterranean experience when eating out? Try a quaint little restaurant on Dunkley Square in Gardens, Cape Town. On a hot day it is lovely to sit outside under the shady trees while enjoying a typical Greek meal, sipping cool wine from small glasses. In winter, on a really stormy day in Cape Town, it is warm and cozy inside.
We stumbled upon this charming little restaurant when I was desperate to find a new hair stylist. For years, we went to Crimpers in Port Elizabeth for our hair. Finding a new hair stylist in a new city is not easy. The two of us were enjoying lunch in the garden of one of Madame Zingara’s restaurants, Café Paradiso, (to be found in Kloof Street) when I saw the hairstyle of one of the waitresses. I immediately knew that my search for a new hair stylist has come to an end. She referred me to her sister, Christelle, at LOVE salon in Dunkley Square. Now this salon is really one of the best in Cape Town. I have been a happy client since my first appointment with Christelle. And of course, just opposite the salon, Maria’s is situated.
The staff at Maria’s is extremely friendly. The owners, Kate and Cleon, are always around, making sure that their guests are happy. And best of all, well- mannered dogs on leashes are welcome outside and even get a bone from Cleon to munch on while their owners are having a meal.
On the menu is divine Greek food. Tapas, of course and then hearty dishes like moussaka (my personal favourite); free range Karoo lamb with potato, veggies and Greek salad (Deon’s favourite); fish and heavenly chips with homemade mayonaisse; stuffed pita breads; lovely wine served in tiny glasses, Greek pastries and strong espresso are some of the items on the menu. You are really reminded of Greece on your visit to Maria’s. This is a very special find and we have been back many times and will remain faithful patrons.
A last thought – for me, key to a good restaurant is consistency. And that is what you get at Maria’s. Good food – always!
