Live Bait, Kalk Bay
We love to visit Kalk Bay, a fishing village on the coast of False Bay and also home to the Kalk Bay Reef surf spot. If you like shopping, there are lots of quaint little shops. You could visit the Kalk Bay Trading Post if you like antiques, visit one of the many clothing stores (our favourite is Papagayo) or buy silver jewellery from Oh So Boho. If you like art, you should visit the Kalk Bay Modern art gallery. If you like to exercise, you can walk the Historical Mile from Kalk Bay to Muizenberg, but if you are a bit lazy, take a steam train day trip on the Atlantic Rail. If you like fishing, you can do that at the pier.
The only problem with Kalk Bay is that it is extremely busy and difficult to find a parking space during peak times. Another problem is that there are many restaurants, too many, therefore it is rather difficult to decide where to have lunch. The previous time we had lunch at From Cape to Cuba, which was really good. But usually we have lunch at Live Bait, a restaurant at the seaside. It is situated directly below Harbour House, literally on the breakwater of Kalk Bay Harbour. Harbour House and Live Bait have the same owner.
This restaurant is a good choice if you like relaxed dining with a view to die for. Floor to ceiling windows help to enhance the view. Fishing boats are moored meters away, which is the reason why they serve the freshest of fish. I usually order the Hake and Chips with Basil Mayonnaise. Deon prefers the Linguini with small prawns, mussels, calamari, line fish, fresh rocket and parmesan, in a garlic and white wine sauce.
Certainly, one needs time to visit Kalk Bay, so next time we will not only go for lunch, but spend a night or two – maybe during the whale season, between May and October. Who knows, maybe we will book for a tango class or two at Cape to Cuba restaurant while we are there.
