Kip McGrath training in Amanzimtoti
It was a New Year’s resolution. The decision had been made. After 36 years of teaching, it was time to do something else. On the last Sunday of January 2014, at 21:05, I hit the “send” button on my computer. And that exhilarating moment brought me to the end of my 36 year career as a teacher working for the Department of Education. How scary, but at the same time, how totally exciting! After thorough thought and discussion, I decided to buy a franchise – a Kip McGrath Education Centre – opening 1 May 2014 at Loeriepark in Durbanville. It is a remedial center for learners who need extra help in Mathematics, English and Afrikaans.
Deon decided to join me for training in Amanzimtoti. We hired a cat sitter (who was excellent) and on the last day of the first term, we were off to Head Office in Toti for eleven days of hard work. We had to be at Head Office for training at seven in the morning until late afternoon, even on Saturdays and Sundays. But we survived and I am now looking forward to opening day at my centre in Durbanville.
We stayed at the Africa’s Beaded Bird Guesthouse a block away from Head Office. Paula is the owner of the guesthouse. Another couple who came for training also stayed at this guesthouse. We could not stop commenting on the excellent service we had. Paula spoiled us with early morning breakfast. One morning we were surprised with omelets filled with mushrooms and cream cheese, another morning we had interesting bacon and egg bakes, prepared in muffin pans and topped with cheese. It was delicious. She gave us lunch boxes packed with surprises like lovely sandwiches; juice; chocolates, peanuts, chips and fruit. We loved opening the lunch boxes after a grueling morning in class. Priscilla, the other trainee who stayed over in the guesthouse, was spoiled with special treats because she has certain food allergies. She had delicious salads for lunch and breakfast made especially for her. When we got back in our room late afternoon, there were special treats left in the room for us.
We will certainly be back at this guesthouse when we go for re-training next year.
