We do not go to the cinema often, but like cocooning at home while watching a beautiful movie. We recently discovered DVD Nouveau in Bree Street, Cape Town and wow, what an experience. They have an incredible selection of DVD’s for rent, everything you have ever heard of, all the series and all the classics are there. Best of all, you only have to return the DVD’s after two days. Sadly, we had an excellent DVD shop called 1001 Movies to see before you die in Durbanville for a few months, also with everything you would ever want to watch on the shelves, but they closed their doors recently and disappeared into thin air.
On our shelf in the living room, there are lots of movies. The Sound of Music will always be one of my favourite classics, but Deon runs away as soon as I threaten to watch it. Beautiful movies are a set of three by Deepa Mehta, called Water; Fire and Earth. The main theme is abuse against women. My Name is Khan is a story of an unconventional hero who has Aspergers Syndrome and the obstacles he must overcome to regain the love of his love. The beautiful Whale Rider is a story about a grandfather who disregards his granddaughter because she is a girl. One of the best movies ever is Bread & Tulips, Winner of 9 David Di Donatello Awards (Italy’s national film awards). This film is about Rosalba’s life which is about to change when she is accidentally left behind while on vacation with her tyrannical husband and she decides to take a holiday on her own in Venice. I loved Julie & Julia after also reading Julia Child’s fascinating book. There are lots and lots more movies that we watch again and again, despite people asking us how it is possible to watch a movie twice. We do that, even three or four times.
One of the wonderful movies on our shelf is As It Is In Heaven. It is about a successful and renowned international conductor whose dream is to create music that will open people’s hearts. But, after suffering a heart attack, he retires to the far north of Sweden, to the village where he was bullied as a child. He becomes involved with the local choir. The choir develops and he rediscovers his own joy in music. Gabriella, a beautiful girl in the choir catches his attention and they fall in love. He also becomes involved with the villagers’ personal problems. There is a minister who is jealous of the choir’s success and who tries to close it down. Heart after heart opens, as it had always been Daniel’s dream. Then the choir takes part in an annual competition in Austria. One of the best moments of the movie is when Gabriella, abused by her husband, performs her song during the competition. And I will not reveal the end of the story. Remember to have a box of tissues with you when you settle in to watch this beauty.
