Gastao’s Restaurant
Gastao’s Restaurant
I love the unexpected – well, if it is positively unexpected. It was Friday again, but we decided not to have lunch at a restaurant this time. Having lunch at home seemed like a very good idea.
Around twelve in the afternoon Deon asked if I wanted to accompany him to Edward Street in Bellville as he needed something at one of the shops in that very interesting street. Of course I needed a break from work and agreed to go with him.
On our way back Deon told me about a new restaurant at the Tyger Waterfront which specializes in craft beer and Tapas. It did not take much longer than a few seconds to decide to visit Gastao’s for a quick lunch.
Gastao’s opened their doors at the Tyger Waterfront in 2015 and it seems to be very popular. It is situated in an awesome spot with a great view of the water. A friendly and competent waitron explained the different Portuguese style tapas on the menu.
We did not order a pitcher of craft beer as we are not partial to beer, but they also have wine on the menu. For lunch, we could choose five different Tapas. It was difficult to decide, but with the help of the waitron we chose Beer Battered Hake Goujons served with homemade tartar sauce and fresh lemon; Paprika Poppers which are grilled paprika poppers filled with cream cheese and bacon jam, topped with smoked mozzarella; Patatas Bravas, crispy potatoes topped with a tomato sauce and aioli and Deon’s favourite – Pork Belly served with Jonkers Weiss and Sage Jus with crispy pinwheel scratchings. Tapas number five was Calamari in Salsa Verde.
The Tapas took us back in thoughts to a night in Barcelona where we had Tapas at a restaurant with our friend André, indeed a meal to remember. Afterwards we were mesmerized by the Magic Fountain show, something not to be missed when visiting Barcelona.
The Tapas were excellent. We shared crème brûlée with Greek shortbread which was delicious. After the meal we strolled along the waterfront and decided that it was a good idea to have lunch at Gastao’s restaurant – much better than having lunch at home on a Friday. After all, having lunch at a new restaurant on a Friday afternoon is our treat for working hard during the week. Thanks Gastao’s, we’ll be back!
