Many years ago in Central, Port Elizabeth, we stumbled upon a restaurant called Zorba. Inside the almost shabby building, the vibe was exuberating. We did not book and the restaurant was full, but the owners welcomed us and we had our first encounter with Bonny’s food. I ordered my first Moussaka prepared by Bonny and it was the best meal ever.
It became our favourite restaurant for many years. I remember Bonny’s Pasta Penne with Grilled Chicken and Pesto and the excellent Salmon, Avocado and Rösti salad. Deon became hooked on the dessert consisting of nuts; green fig; Brie and crackers. Years later Bonny opened more restaurants, but we shall always cherish Zorba as one of our most favourite restaurants ever.
After relocating to Cape Town four years ago, we visited many restaurants, some very good, others not so good. Then, about four months ago, Deon discovered a restaurant in Claremont which is called Casa du Sol. The chef and co-owner is our own Bonny from Port Elizabeth. We were delighted and on a cold winter’s afternoon in July, we had lunch at the restaurant with the name that means House of the Sun. The cuisine is authentically Portuguese, but with a dash of South African flair.
After welcoming us and chatting for a while, Bonny suggested the tapas and a salad and went off to her kitchen. Her dishes are as good as always, Bonny is really an excellent chef and her hands-on approach in the kitchen has always been part of her success. The informal atmosphere in the restaurant and her cuisine is something everyone living in Cape Town, should experience. Top of the class!
We are happy to have Bonny back in our lives again.
